Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that is used specifically in the ureter and urinary system. The ureter conveys urine from the kidneys to the bladder. In this surgery, a tool called a Ureteroscope is used to navigate the urinary system inside the body. This tool is a tube with a lens on the end, allowing the surgeon to see a magnified view. This tool also has ports on it, allowing for lasers, graspers, and balloon dilators to be inserted.
A ureteroscopic procedure is commonly done to remove and repair ureter stones, strictures and tumors. The procedure involves only a small incision, and is done under local anesthetic. In many cases, patients leave the same day as their procedure.
What does this all mean??? Ureteroscopy allows surgery in the urinary system to be much simpler and less painful than in the past. This allows for people to have simple procedures that don't require them to spend so much time in the hospital. This technique is promoting better health for patients and a quicker recovery.
